Experiential or work-based learning associated with the completion of formal qualifications to support working in collecting institutions such as archives, galleries, libraries, and museums has a long history and has also been the subject of much debate in the literature. Experiential learning experiences can take many forms in collecting institutions, as indicated by Bastian and Webber (2008). While referring to the archival profession, the following quotation is relevant across a range of disciplines or professions that work with collections in some way: Whether called practica, field studies, or internships, some type of experiential learning has always been a recognized entree into the archival profession. This on-site learning may be a component of a graduate archival education program, or a stand-alone opportunity offered by a corporation, academic repository, or not-for-profit institution. Internships may take place during the summer, through a semester, or Over the course of a year in any of the myriad organizations and institutions that beep archives and records, including government archives, corporate records offices, museums, historical societies, and academic institutions. The experience may be paid or unpaid, pre-or post-professional, for academic credit, part of a course or a non-credit enhancement to student learning (Bastian & Webber, 2008:1).
