Description

The practice of making decisions about what is worth teaching is as old as schooling itself, and despite the pressure educators feel today, there is little reason for most of them to increase the time, energy, and concern spent on addressing changes in standards. Understanding the motivations that drive the development of standards can help educators (especially progressives and constructivists) continue the work of building rich and deep student knowledge and ability, while also meeting educational goals imposed by increasingly remote external bodies. Librarians not only face the same goal of justifying their work developing student knowledge and ability in light of new standards, but are also increasingly well-placed to help their fellow educators through collaboration centered on those standards that call upon students to access, interpret, and connect information drawn from diverse sources.
